Health and Germs

Health and germs

This month we are learning about food and fitness in preschool.

Today we talked about those darn yucky germs that make us sick.

Germs are everywhere, there is no hiding from them.  They are on toys, tables, light switches, and doorknobs. Germs are even on things outside.

This doesn't mean that we should be afraid of them. No, some germs are actually good and help our body get stronger. However, we need to do what we can to not let these pesky germs get into our bodies.
How do we do this?  By washing our hands! Washing tables, toys and other objects that are frequently touched by other people.

When should we wash our hands?
After using the bathroom.
Before eating.
Before helping prepare food.
And when they look dirty.

When we wash our hands with SOAP and water, the germs wash down the drain.

When our hands are clean from germs we stay healthy.

We put germs letters on the table and let the kids spray germ away (water in a spray bottle) on them through out the day to see what would happen.

The wetter the letters got the worse the germs looked. Yup, we where making those germs look sick themselves and destroying them with each spray.

This was a fun experiment.  I had the kids tell me what letter they were spraying and the sound it made. Great way to combine science, health and phonics together.

The children then made cute door hangers to help them remember to wash their hands.
