More planets/MGT

We have been busy learning about all of the planets in our solar system.
One of the fun things we learned was about the planet Mercury.  We learned that it is very HOT in the day time and Very COLD in the night.
We experienced the change by putting our hands in very warm water and then in a bowl of ice.

The children all agreed that Mercury wouldn't be a fun planet to live on.

Then we decided to see what would happen to the ice if we put it in the water...

To the children's amazement, the ice melted and the warm water became cold.
Isn't science fun?

We painted Venus-the hot side and the cold side. Glued them together and what a fun planet puppet.

On another day we created U.F.O's

The instructions said to paint paper plates silver....the only silver paint I have isn't kid friendly. I could have had them use grey paint, but that isn't shiny.  So, I came up with another plan...tin foil!
Super shiny and very easy to use.

The children used makers to color the top of the UFO and then we glued them together.
It was fun watching them glue on big and tiny jewels to embellish their project.  What a great fine motor activity.

Her are some of the finished UFO's.

Some of the kids decided to see if they would fly-they didn't fly very well.

To help children with pre-reading and pre-math skills we played a memory game with planet cards in class.

The best part was that each student got to take hoe their own set to play at home.

We also used planets to create a pattern. This is a great pre reading skill.  If you look, there are patterns all around us.

One of the great things that Mother Goose Time includes with their curriculum, is little journals for each child.
In the journals, you will find the letters, numbers, color, &shape of the month.

We take time to practice writing, drawing, and coloring skills in these journals.

Sometimes we don't finish everything in the journal before the month end, but the children gladly take them home to finish them up.

Some of the younger children are having a hard time grasping the art of tracing. So, learning to spell their names is difficult.
I came up with a fun way for them to learn the letters of their name in order and to be able to recognize their own name.

I took the name strips that are provided by mother goose time each month and some of our special writing paper, placed the child'd name on both. I then cut up the name on our special writing paper.
The child can then match the letters on their name tags and learn to spell their name.
Each child took this home in a plastic ziplock bag to practice at home.

We have learned 3 letters, 2 numbers, one color & three sight words this month.

The month isn't over yet, and we are so excited to learn even more.
